ipod video

January 12th, 2007

On January 9th Steve Jobs introduced the long awaited and highly anticipated iphone. The device is slick in looks and full of every possible functionality that can be thought of. The iPhone is actually 3 devices into one.

  1. iphone
  2. ipod
  3. internet device

The tidbit which really caught my attention when reading the live keynote was that the phone in america, will be available to buy from Apples’ and Cingulars’ retail stores. What steve also mentioned was that to buy the phone you must also purchase a Cingular contract for 2 years. This i find extremely frustrating and don’t think is a good move. For one, has apple thought of those people who already have contracts with their existing providers? I’m in the UK and i have very cheap tarriff with T-mobile and should Apple make a similiar move to in the UK buy a contract to have the phone then there is very little chance of me a buying such a device. Don’t get me wrong, i love the device, in fact im a huge apple fan but the device will already be expensive and on top of that a contract will be required to purchase.

My second issue is the convergence of the iPhone. As mentioned the iPhone is 3 devices but what about having a true solo widescreen video ipod without the phone functionality. Theres a huge gap left there by Apple and im sure they can’t leave that market empty. I don’t think apple is going to leave such a gap and since Apple has the technology (in iPhone) and resources i do think there will be such a device being announced by Apple at the next Special event, a true solo video ipod, much like the iPhone. That’s where they’re gonna make more money.

Final thoughts

The iPhone is a great device but i deally i wouldn’t buy one because of its need to purchase a new contract thats why i believe there will be a true video ipod to meet the needs of those customers which do not want the phone functionality.
