I used to watch a ton of cartoons as a kid and can easily get lost in that world. I’m sure many people went through simliar experiences and so I thought I make a list and share it. What’s more is that there’s nothing like this on in today’s world, its all rubbish TV and i feel sorry for the kids.

New theme

Over the last couple of days I’ve been re-skinning my blog, browser testing and fixing any bugs that cropped up but as you can see this time I went for a more minimal look with some css3 love. Additionally I’m only supporting FireFox 3 and Safari 3 because I’m sick and tired of IE’s oddities and it’s stupid css rendering. Development should be seamless and should work across all browsers at once but this isn’t the reality and we (front-end developers) endlessly mumble and groan at stupid IE! So if you’re viewing this site in IE I’m sure you were greeted with a nice and polite message.

Like I mentioned earlier I’m using some css3 selectors more specifically I have a custom font being applied to all my headings using @font-face no Sifr or typeface here though I’m sure they have their advantages. It’s a good time for experimentation because Safari and FireFox are fairly neck and neck in terms of css3 support - with exception for animation support in FireFox. Developers should now start implementing css3 styles where possible for future enhancement and not always have IE6 in the back of the mind and force it to do something that it isn’t capable of. Yes majority of the users will be pissed that something looks broken in IE6 but if we developers tell the users to upgrade their browsers to get a better web experience, then I’m sure the minor inconvenience will pay dividends to developers and users alike. If this doesn’t happen then the web isn’t going anywhere and we’re just going to have to wait till IE6 drops enough marketshare for it to be completely dropped. With that being said browsers are changing much faster than before in terms of javascript and css rendering and it’s already allowing developers to add new features to websites and web applications so i guess that’s a positive sign.

I haven’t updated this thing for a over a year and i thought i better write or do something this. I just came back from a two week holiday and it had its ups and downs. I’ll be writing more about my time in the next couple of days and it will be a long post too.

Additionally I’m also using a new theme for the blog provided by themelab so props go out to them. I added my own modifications to the theme which include adding some containing wrappers and streamlining the css a bit.

I also registered to use twitter a few weeks back and I know get what every other twitter user was on about. At first it seems useless but its a great tool to get quick snippets of info, comments or whatever out there in a jiffy. I’m hooked.

New iMac = Gorgeous

Apple released the fourth generation of its imac line which is gorgeous! Encased in aluminium and glass casing the machine is pleasing to look at [as are all mac products], faster processors and even thinner. All i can say is, WOW!

Apple Leopard: delayed!

Well this sucks balls! I saw this headline over at the BBC which mentions that the Apples’ forthcoming operating system name Leopard is delayed till October. During last years’ WWDC Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, mentioned that Leopard will be released during spring of 2007, which is not happening anymore. Also at the WWDC conference Steve also said, “Leopard will ship looong before Longhorn” (now known as Windows Vista). Oh Steve, you must feel like a fool for saying that because consumer edition Windows Vista has already come out.

Xbox360 07 dash update

Looks as if the upcoming spring dash update to the xbox360 has been leaked. There a couple of new features which i think will be useful. For one content can now be downloaded in low power mode, this is great for those long downloads for the big movies and demos which are going to take some time. In addition the marketplace will also get its own blade now totalling 5 blades, which is rightly deserved. One other feature which isn’t highlighted in the below video but hinted by Major Nelson at the xbox360 fanboy podcast is that if you have a xbox360 game in the drive, the dashboard will now show what game is in the drive! Pretty cool feature. Major Nelson has made the request numerous times on his podcast which is why i think this will be included.

MacBook Pro

Over the last few weeks I have been really considering purchasing my very first 15″ MacBook Pro to use as my general machine as well as web development work. I’m also considering buying an OEM version of windows vista for dual booting purposes which will be supported by Parallels.

Parallels recently came out with a new version which supports Coherence mode which allows users to run windows applications without seeing windows. I don’t necessarily need to run windows as I have already found alternative solutions to my daily used applications but It would still be nice to have access to my windows apps.

Adobe Creative

Adobe have announced the new batch of creative suites catered for web designers/developers. The CS3 packages look very interesting and especially DreamWeaver CS3. DW now includes features to support AJAX based websites and a lot more integration between all applications. I’m really looking forward to these applications but unfortunatley my current system doesn’t meet the minimum requirements so that’s an excuse for me to buy a new machine, possibly a new macbook pro.

Learning JavaScript

As a front end developer, knowing the most commonly used languages is paramount to the development of a website. But at times it can be daunting to take the challenge of learning a new language and implementing it the working environment. Throughout my journey of studying and implementing javascript, I sometimes questions whether it’s necessary to write 10, 15 30 or more lines of code to create and run a particular function. I do understand the issue of seperating content from presentation and behaviour but sometimes it is just unnecessary to go through all that effort to write lines of code to create a working function, i.e. opening external links in a new window.

Previously this was supported by the TARGET_BLANK html which is deprecated and less used but what i think is needed to is to make it easier to write javascript code to make functions work, maybe an upgrade in javascript code? Maybe I’m just winging but I’m sure beginners as well as the more experienced may ask themselves this very question and wish that easier methods were available. In the meantime I am going to continue learning.
